Threat: The Real IRA said the Queen was 'wanted for war crimes' and they would make sure she 'got the message'
Yesterday’s threat by a member of the dissident republican group will raise fears terrorists could target the Queen and Prince Philip during their tour.
The masked man said the Queen was ‘wanted for war crimes’ and said they would ensure she got ‘the message’. He also vowed police officers would be killed.
A £6.2million security operation is already under way to ensure the sovereign’s safety when she makes the historic three-day visit on May 17.
It is three weeks since Catholic police officer Ronan Kerr was murdered after a car bomb was planted outside his home in Omagh, Northern Ireland.
Speaking at a rally in a Londonderry cemetery yesterday, the man read a statement which said: ‘Oglaigh na hEireann [the IRA] urge all self-respecting Irishmen and women to resist the upcoming insult that is the visit of a British monarch to Irish soil, the criminal free state government invite is not on behalf of the Irish people but to further the selfish interests of a self-serving elite.
‘Despite the best efforts of the media, big business and other power blocks to portray this visit as acceptable, we clearly state that the Irish people will not capitulate.
‘The Queen of England is wanted for war crimes in Ireland and not wanted on Irish soil.’
Chillingly, he added: ‘We will do our best to ensure she and the gombeen class that act as her cheerleaders get that message.’
The masked man added that police officers would be targeted ‘regardless of their religion, cultural background or motivation’.
While it falls short of a direct threat against the crown, MI5 officers will no doubt take the comments very seriously ahead of the monarch’s visit.
The rally was organised by the 32 County Sovereignty Movement to mark the anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

The speech came after Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness said the party objected to the Queen’s visit but he did not support any rallies against it.
He encouraged those who felt compelled to protest to do so peacefully.
The Queen is due to visit a number of sensitive sites that could be used by extremists to stir up anger.
Accompanied by Prince Philip, she will go to Dublin’s Garden of Remembrance dedicated to ‘those who gave their lives in the cause of Irish freedom’.
An event will also be held at Croke Park, home of the Gaelic Athletic Association and scene of a massacre in 1920 when British troops opened fire on a crowd, killing 14 people.
Last night Mark Durkan, Foyle MP and former Social Democratic and labour Party leader, said: ‘The Real IRA’s words are intended to intimidate everyone but their pretensions to legitimacy will impress no one.
‘Politicians do not really have to argue that this group is morally and politically bankrupt when they are driven to attack and threaten nationalists who want to serve the community and their country through a policing vocation. Their statement speaks for itself.’
Northern Ireland is already on a high state of alert.
On Saturday night, a haul of suspected bomb-making equipment was found by the Police Service of Northern Ireland in south Armagh.
The Real IRA killed two soldiers in Antrim two years ago, and last year exploded a car bomb in Derry.
Spokesmen for Buckingham Palace and the Metropolitan Police said they could not comment on security issues.
